Dual Enrollment

Get high school and college credit at the same time!

Dual Enrollment is a program that allows eligible students currently attending Miami Dade County public schools, participating private and charter schools, or home school to simultaneously enroll in college course(s). The credits that students earn at MDC count toward high school graduation and can be applied to a college degree or certificate.

Dual enrollment:
– Enriches the course opportunities for outstanding secondary school students
– Shortens the time to attain a college degree or certificate
– Saves students and parents money, as dual enrollment students are exempt from paying tuition and fees
– Provides students with college credit that is transferable to a college or university

Eligibility
Students in grades 6-12 that are enrolled in Miami Dade County public schools, participating private and charter schools, or home school are eligible to participate in the MDC Dual Enrollment program.

Students must have:
– A minimum 3.0 high school unweighted grade point average (GPA)
– Passed the appropriate Reading and Writing sections of the College’s Basic Skills Assessment Test (PERT or CPT), or submitted adequate SAT/ACT scores.
– Permission from the parent/guardian, school principal and counselor
– Met with the College Dual Enrollment Coordinator at the campus he/she plans to attend
– An understanding that the amount of work necessary to succeed in dual enrollment courses will be greater than in high school courses

Note: Students participating in dual enrollment must earn a grade of “C” or higher in their college-level courses and maintain a 3.0 GPA in high school to continue participation. Students whose College GPA falls below 2.0 are ineligible to continue dual enrollment. Students may lose eligibility if they are disruptive to the learning process.

The only exception to the required GPA is for Student Life Skills (SLS) courses that help students make the transition to college, provide orientation to college life and help develop academic, career, and personal goals. To enroll in SLS courses, students must have a minimum 2.50 high school weighted GPA. Although no specific scores are required, students must be assessed and have valid PERT, CPT, SAT or ACT scores.

Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to the College.

Dual Enrollment

The testing criteria and guidelines for early college (dual) enrollment are as follows:

Testing is required for all students seeking early college (dual) enrollment.

Florida Statute, Section 1007.271 describes the dual enrollment program as the matriculation of an eligible secondary student or home education student in postsecondary courses that can be applied toward a career and technical certificate, or an associate or baccalaureate degree. The credits that students earn through dual enrollment must also be used toward high school graduation. The Florida State Board of Education has identified a list of dual enrollment courses that high schools shall accept toward meeting the high school graduation requirements. Additionally, Miami Dade College and Miami-Dade County Public Schools have agreed on a number of courses that are also available for dual enrollment.

Dual enrollment is available to students in grades 6 through 12. These students must pass the appropriate sections of the FCAT 2.0 (Grade 10) test dates through March 2017, CPT/PERT, ACT, or SAT to enroll in college credit courses requiring competency in the associated placement area. Refer to Degree Programs or College Credit Certificate Programs. The developmental education testing exemptions do not apply to dual enrollment students

All courses on the approved list, except for SLS 1125, SLS 1401, SLS 1502, and SLS 1510 require college-ready placement status in reading and writing. Students who are deficient in writing and/or reading skills may not enroll in college credit English courses or other college credit courses on the approved list, until they have demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing by passing the appropriate sections of a basic skills assessment test.

Students may not earn more than twelve (12) college credit hours prior to demonstrating proficiency in the basic skill areas of reading, writing and mathematics. Exceptions may be granted provided that the student is concurrently enrolled in a secondary course(s) in the subject area for which the student has been deemed deficient by the postsecondary assessment.

Students who have accumulated twelve (12) college credit hours and have not yet demonstrated proficiency in the basic skill areas of reading, writing and mathematics must be advised, in writing by the school district, of the requirements for associate degree completion and state university admission, including information about future financial aid eligibility and also the potential costs of accumulating excessive college credit, as outlined in s. 1009.286, F.S.

Courses available for dual enrollment

Enrolling at MDC gives outstanding high school and middle school students a wider range of courses to choose from. Dual Enrollment students gain valuable experience that prepares them for future college success.

• The Florida State Board of Education has identified a list of dual enrollment courses that high schools accept toward meeting high school graduation requirements. Additionally, any college credit course comprised of three (3) credits or more can be considered for Dual Enrollment at MDC, subject to approval by the student’s school and MDC academic unit.
• Students must meet all course prerequisite and placement testing requirements for a course to be considered for dual enrollment.
• Dual Enrollment students may enroll in fully online college credit courses during the summer term only, beginning in summer 2017. A hybrid or blended course that requires a student´s presence at the college campus is permitted during the fall and spring terms.
• Students can enroll in a maximum of two courses each semester (in addition to required labs) in order to ensure academic success. Additional coursework may be considered on an individual basis and must be approved by an Academic Dean and the School District Office.
• Developmental education courses, physical education courses, private music lessons, and some recreational courses are not eligible for dual enrollment.
• Students should note that all courses may not be offered every semester, on every campus. Courses may be unavailable/closed due to enrollment capacity.
• If a student is projected to graduate from high school before the scheduled completion date of a dual enrollment course, the student may not register for that course through dual enrollment.
• Dual Enrollment students are responsible for obtaining approval from the school counselor to withdrawal from a course and completing the appropriate paperwork during the designated drop period. The consequences of not withdrawing from a college course officially may be detrimental to the student, as the student will receive a failing grade that will affect the student’s GPA and will be reflected on the college transcript.

College tuition payment for the Dual Enrollment program

Dual Enrollment saves students and families time and money! ALL students enrolled in the dual enrollment or Early Admission program are exempt from the payment of tuition and fees.

Textbooks

• Miami-Dade County Public Schools students receive their books at no cost. Students are issued a dual enrollment book voucher from their school and are responsible for returning the books to their school.
• Private school students and home school students must pay for their own books.
• Charter schools are responsible for paying the cost of textbooks for their students participating in Dual Enrollment.

Dual Enrollment application process

• Students must visit the Dual Enrollment Coordinator´s office at the campus they plan to attend and submit a regular Miami Dade College Admission Application together with a Dual Enrollment Program Form. The Dual Enrollment Program Form must include signatures of the student, parent/guardian, school counselor, and school principal, as well as bear the official school seal.
• Both forms should be submitted to the campus Dual Enrollment Coordinator where the student plans to attend at least 10 business days in advance of the requested term of enrollment. Dual enrollment students must submit paper forms in person and may not apply online.
• Students must complete placement testing requirements (bring 2 pieces of ID). To take the PERT at MDC, students must submit the PERT Placement Test Referral Form.
• A new Dual Enrollment Program Form must be submitted for each term/semester enrolled.

Home School Students

• The Dual Enrollment Program Form for home school students must include the signatures of the student, parent/legal guardian, and the Registrar of the M-DCPS Home School Education Office.
• Home school students must provide verification of enrollment in a home education program that has been filed with the M-DCPS Homeschool office.
• Home school students are also required to enter into a Home Education Dual Enrollment Articulation Agreement with the College to participate in the dual enrollment program.

Early Admission

The Early Admission program is a form of dual enrollment through which eligible high school students or home school students enroll at Miami Dade College on a full-time basis during their senior year in courses that are creditable toward the high school diploma and the Associate degree.

Students should consult with a high school counselor to enroll in courses that count toward their high school graduation. Early Admission students must enroll in a minimum of 24 college credits (12 credits/semester) which meet the requirements for the student´s senior year and high school graduation.

Eligibility Criteria

• A minimum 3.5 high school unweighted grade point average
• Passed successfully the College´s Basic Skills Assessment Test (PERT) or have appropriate SAT/ACT scores
• Authorization from the high school principal, counselor, and parent/guardian
• Expressed intent to pursue a postsecondary degree.
• Complete an interview with the campus Early Admission/Dual Enrollment Coordinator to determine that the student has the potential to successfully complete college credit courses
• Students whose College GPA falls below 2.0 are ineligible to continue Early Admission

Grades

High school students enrolled at MDC will receive grades and credit for their college work, which will be recorded on a permanent academic transcript maintained by the College. The College grades will be sent electronically to the high school for graduation purposes. College credits completed with satisfactory grades will apply toward an associate degree or certificate at MDC. These credits will transfer to any Florida public college or university offering the course with the same prefix and number.

Upon high school graduation, if students do not attend the same college where they earned the Early Admission credit, the application of transfer credit may vary at the receiving institution.
Early Admission Application Process

The Early Admission form with the signatures of the student, principal, counselor and parent/guardian should be submitted with a completed MDC Admission Application in order to obtain special admission to MDC. Both forms should be submitted to the College´s Early Admission/DE Coordinator at the campus the student plans to attend, AT LEAST 10 BUSINESS DAYS IN ADVANCE of the requested term of enrollment.

Early admission students are required to provide a completed Early Admission form for each term/semester in order to retain enrollment eligibility.
